March Garden Tips

  • Now’s the time to plant trees, shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, groundcovers, fruits and lawns. Add color now with cool season bloomers such as pansies, primrose, stock and calendula. Cool weather vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce can be planted out. Start seeds of warm weather vegetables and annuals indoors.

  • Seed or sod new lawns. Reseed bare spots in established lawns. Keep area moist until seedlings appear, then mow when new grass is 3" high.

  • Choose from our large selection of hedge shears to trim back your summer flowering shrubs such as Caryopteris, Hypericum and Spirea. Don’t forget to cut back your ornamental grasses.

  • Reduce insect population on trees and shrubs with a dormant spray of Ultra Fine Year Round Pesticidal Oil.

  • Fertilize your spring flowering bulbs with Espoma Bulb-tone.

  • Where clay or compacted soils occur, incorporate 2" of PermaTill deep into the planting bed or into the soil around the drip zone of existing plants. A loose, aggregated soil encourages deeper roots, reduces water runoff and promotes soil health.

  • Fertilize your lawn with Espoma Turf-tone for healthy turf and rapid greening.

  • Apply Espoma Flower-tone to perennials, Espoma Holly-tone to azaleas, rhododendrons and evergreens and feed roses with Espoma Rose-tone.

  • For best selection, pick up summer flowering bulbs to be placed outside after May 15th.

  • Start spraying roses for black spot at first sign of leaf bud break. Spray with Bonide Fung-onil, Concern Copper Soap Fungicide or Bonide Neem Oil.

  • It’s spring cleanup time. Completely remove winter mulch. Cultivate to remove winter weeds and debris from the planting beds, then edge.

  • Apply Concern Weed Prevention Plus and scratch it in to prevent future weeds.

  • Spray for spider mites with Ultra-Fine Oil on needles and limbs of arborvitae, cryptomeria, false cypress, fir hemlock, juniper, pine, yew and spruce (except blue spruce).

  • Fertilize trees and shrubs with Jobes Tree & Shrub Spikes.

  • Plant trees and shrubs now using Schultz Starter Plus Root Stimulator.
