Garden Tips
-
Holiday plants like poinsettia, amaryllis and Christmas cactus
will last longer in cool temperatures. When through blooming,
feed poinsettias with Jack’s Classic 20-20-20 every 3-4
weeks throughout the winter.
-
Protect tender plants from the elements with a blanket of Christmas
greens. Prop up your used Christmas Tree near your bird feeders
to create a protected feeding area for small birds.
-
Make friends with the birds - Put out Audubon Birdseed and C&S
Suet Cakes. We also has a great selection of Droll Yankee quality
bird feeders.
-
Winter pruning on a sunny day can give life and bloom to neglected
or overgrown shrubs. However, don’t prune spring-blooming
plants like forsythia, azaleas or rhododendron as you will be
cutting off the flower buds.
- Keep
houseplants away from heat sources and vents. Also, protect plants
from drafts and keep foliage off of cold windows.
-
Heavy snow and ice can damage evergreens and birches. Gently brush
off shrubs, tie arborvitae to prevent splitting and prop up leaning
birches if necessary.
-
Spray houseplants with Safer Houseplant Insecticidal Soap. If
spider mites or mealy bugs are present, add Bonide Systemic Houseplant
Insect Control to soil.
